The Lafayette Hotel was discovered to be on fire on Friday evening which did
considerable damage. The fire broke out about 8 o'clock and started from a flue.
It was discovered by men in the bar room when plaster began to fall from the
wall. It only a few minutes after the alarm was sounded that the fire company
had a stream of water on the blaze which was soon extinguished.
The North Cambria News was not a County Government Paper--that was the
Barnesboro Star, which published all the Liquor Applications in the County on a
contract with the County.
Every one had to apply every year for a license, and it was by no means assured
that they would receive one. This was called License Court and was held till
Prohibition and never revived.

MONSTER PETITION PRESENTED TO COURT.
A monster petition, containing thousand of names and weighing six pounds, was
presented to Judge Stephens at Ebensburg on Tuesday by Attorney Morgan W. Evans,
representing people of Cambria County who are attempting to have the curtains
and screens removed from bar windows and to have back rooms in hotels closed. It
is said that later a request will be made to the court to make a ruling
forbidding "treating."
The Petitioners believe that if the blinds, screens and other coverings were
taken off the windows of hotels bars and the patrons exposed to the view of the
public that not so many people would frequent the bar.
License Court was held by Judge Stevens at Ebensburg on Tuesday, and according
to the judge's remarks, there is little hopes of any new applicants getting a
license in Hastings, and a possible chance of one of the old ones losing their
license.

JUDGE STEPHENS GRANTS LICENSES
Monday Judge Stephens handed down his account list of liquor licenses for
Cambria County. He granted 977 of the applicants, refused 84 and held over five.
The number granted this year is less than than the number granted last year.
In the borough all were granted except D. J. Houck and Frank Simon and G. E.
Maley. Houck has applied for a retail license in the American House and Simon
and Maley in the Palmer House. Those granted here are as follows:
Charles Hetrick, wholesale;
Mrs. Catherine Nagle, retail.
J.W. Brady, retail;
Simon Strittmatter, retail;
J. Praul Rue[Rhue], retail
D. A. Lantzy, retail; and
J. A. Commons, retail.
In Elder Township, two licenses were granted:
F.X. Ott, retail, and
H. G. Washington, retail, both of St. Boniface.
John Guenther, of this place, who applied for a retail license at West Branch in
Barr Township, was refused, as was also Lewis Blackenbecker, formerly of this
place, who applied for a wholesale license at Bakerton.
Same paper, June 6, 1913
NO LICENSE TRANSFERS EXCEPT FOR GOOD CAUSE
Judge M. B. Stephens, after listening to a somewhat lengthy list of applicants
for liquor license transfers in court Monday, told the members of the Cambria
County Bar Association that unless a meritorious plea is presented there will be
no transfer. If petitions are brought into court to say that the license did not
pay, the court indicated that the license would be revoked instead of
transferred, as failure to derive a profit indicates no necessity. No action was
taken on the long list of applications that was submitted. Judge Stephens told
the members of the bar that they should inform their clients of his views, so
that the trivial reasons for liquor transfers would be discontinued. There were
nearly a dozen applicants for transfers.
Thanks for the clarification. I should have known that myself. I did not realize
till I posted the comment that James had run the St. Boniface Hotel. My
husband's family later owned it--Henry Washington Jr m to Elizabeth Kruise.
