THE SAMPLE RUN CEMETERY

Mr. Samuel Howe, Sr., also donated land for the Sample Run Cemetery. (For many years it was known as the "Howe Cemetery.") His half-sister, name unknown, was the first to be buried there. Mr. Howe was the second person to be buried there when he passed away In 1859. Today the cemetery is more commonly called Clymer Cemetery and is located on Cemetery Road.

BASEBALL FIELDS IN SAMPLE RUN

Baseball used to be a popular public past time, and Second Sample Run had two grassy baseball fields. The miners used to play ball there in the fresh air and sunlight to relieve the stress of working in deep, dark mines. There were actually ball fields at both ends of Second Sample Run. Now there is a Recreational Area and meadow. Sample Run had a softball team for a number of years.

The Sample Run softball team 0f 1937 fielded the following lineup: first row, from left, Thomas Koches, John A. Meshanko, Albert Kodman, John Paul, Andy Paul, George Furche; second row, manager Andrew S. Lezark, Steve Sasala, Andy Gall, William Gaul, Paul Boston, Steve Gaul, Leonard Thayer; background right, Frank Boston and John Grady. This old photograph was submitted by Theresa (Lezark) Kuchta of Clymer, Pa. the sister of manager Andrew A. Lezark.
