THE SAMPLE RUN SWIMMING HOLE

Just behind where the present Clymer Sewage Plant is located just off Route 286 and near Two-Lick Creek, children frolicked in a swimming hole for many decades, which was created by simply building a shallow stone damn. Children had to rebuild the stone damn every summer after spring floods washed it away. Nowadays the swimming hole no longer exists, and it would not be permitted to rebuild it due to the proximity to the plant. Here is a recent photo of the area where the swimming hole used to be.

Site of "ye ol' swimmin' hole." Tranquil in summer, raging after spring rains and the snow melt.

THE SAMPLE RUN RESERVOIR

There used to be a reservoir above Second Sample Run and also just above the Sample Run Mine. At one time It looked surreal because long dark pipes ran under the water with vertical iron tubes extending out of the water that aerated the water to cool it. The pipes were used to channel water to the Sample Run Power Plant to generate electricity. Folks used to swim and fish (mainly catfish) in the reservoir, although no one was supposed to trespass. Today the pipes are gone and the reservoir is privately owned. Here is a photo of what is now a small pleasant lake.
